AQUARIST SOCIETY 2007 OPEN SHOW Report by Karen Vickers (Select AS) On
Sunday 30th September we held our annual Tropical and Coldwater Fish Show. The
event took place at Appleby Froddingham Social Club, Scunthorpe. Although
the auction went extremely well with 14 lots and a good variety fish for auction,
all members were disappointed with the lack of fish entries on the show bench
which was only a mere 135, spread over the whole 39 individual classes. However
the fish that were benched were of a very high quality and included a huge London
Shubunkin, a Geophagus Surinamensis, a Puntius Denisonii, a Chaca Bankanensis,
a Hara Hara, a Microglanis Iheringi, a Gobiocichla Ethelwynnae, a Homaloptera
Confuzona plus many other interesting fish. Best in Show was won by I &
K Walbridge with a beautiful Distichodus Noboli which received 87 points. The
two Reserve Best in Shows were won by K & D Lawton with an Alonocara Benschi
which received 86.5 points and KPJ with a Brochis Multiradiatus which received
86 points. Best Exhibit was won by K & D Lawton with a breeder's team of
Xiphophorus Xiphidium. The Junior Section was won by Ryan Haworth with a Hara
Hara, 2nd and 3rd was won by Lauryn Brown. Select AS have attended all
Yorkshire Shows this year, barring Wyke (a misunderstanding regarding dates) and
also have attended a great number of FNAS and FBAS shows. We were very disappointed
that there were an awful lot of showers who promised to attend and didn't. We
send our thanks to all the judges Mr Trevor Douglas, Mrs Patricia Jones, Mr Edward
Cheetham and Mr David Marshall who did a great job. We would also like to
thank the following people who helped us with the following jobs, as without their
help there would have been no show. Auctioneer- Mr Steve Jones who was aided
with the running & organization from Darren Waddington, Ben Waddington, Roy
Blackburn (Members of Castleford AS), Martin Tyrrell, who also benched fish for
the first time and managed to pick up a few places. Michael Vickers (my very own
Nephew), Lauryn Brown (my Daughter) and our very own Paul Brown & Jim Haworth.
The Auction money and chittys were sorted by Marian Hildred and Joan Douglas. Raffle-The
raffle tickets were sold of course by the raffle ticket queen Sue Kenworthy (who
made an outstanding amount of money), with folding help from Ivor and Edith Johnson,
Marian Hildred and Joan Douglas. Arthur Kenworthy also aided Sue with the handing
out of raffle prizes, as well as helping out with other small jobs. Tombola-Lauryn
Brown, Ryan Haworth and Michael Vickers made a good amount of money on the tombola.
Administration- This was done by Cliff Hildred and myself. Ryan Haworth
(Jim's Grandson) displayed the show results. Stewarding- This was done by
Kev Lawton. Booking in-The show entries were booked in by Ben Waddington. Photos-These
were taken by David Lawton and Arthur Kenworthy. I hope that nobody has
been missed out on this list and if they have I must apologize, as there were
so many people who helped. With so many generous donations for the show,
we were able to offer a special raffle which consisted of two prizes. The first
prize was donated by Aqua One and was an Aquastart 500 Tank & Cabinet, which
also came with a £20 voucher to spend at Viscum Water Gardens. The
second prize was also a tank made by Aqua One, but this time a UFO 350 Corner
Tank & Cabinet. This was a late and unexpected donation given to us by Kesh
Aquatics, which is a small business in Immingham that stocks all kinds of tropical
fish, marine fish and reptiles, along with making a lot of his own custom made
products. There was also a standard raffle with almost 40 prizes, again
this was because of so many companies donating generously and also some individuals
bringing extra raffle prizes on the day, for which we also give our thanks. We
must also thank Heather & Pete Tyrrell who donated a large number of Tombola
prizes. There were also some very good prizes for Best in Show and Best
Exhibit, which included among other things some expensive pumps kindly donated
by Aquatic Solutions and some very large bags of the ZM High protein foods. We
were surprised at the amount of small businesses that donated a prize or prizes,
especially when some of the larger retailers in the area (mentioning no names)
were not willing even to advertise the show, let alone donate a prize. 1st,
2nd and 3rd places in each section each received a good bag of prizes. We
would ask you please to support the following people that supported and donated
our show.
